Congress Needs to Hear from You About Syria

Congress need to hear that their constituents are opposed to any authorization for the use of military power in Syria. (See phone numbers below.)

This past week, we’ve watched something unexpectedly hopeful: people all across the United States saying they are tired of war and are opposed to yet another military intervention. And remarkably, this mobilization has been so sudden and so powerful that members of Congress appear to be listening to the voice of their constituents.

The recent statements of the Russian and Syrian governments offers some prospect of a peaceful solution. And the eagerness of the Obama Administration to seize on that initiative reflects the pressure we are generating here in the United States. But it is far too early to claim victory or to stop our phenomenal work.

Already, members of the US Senate are drafting a new resolution, which supports diplomacy but also authorizes the use of force of military force if diplomacy does not yield a quick specific result. This ignores the fact that Americans do not support a US-led military intervention, even if one particular plan is rejected.

In the next 24 hours, we can expect other initiatives that wrap an authorization for the use of force inside a call for more diplomacy.

In the next 24 hours, we can expect other initiatives that wrap an authorization for the use of force inside a call for more diplomacy. And President Obama will be speaking this evening.

For calls to the DC offices, the Friends Committee on National Legislation has set-up a toll-free number. This will make it possible to keep track of the numbers of calls coming in. Toll free number is 1-855-686-6927.
